Through my grandmother’s correspondence with individuals such as Fred Baldino, Steven Karras, and others, she came in possession of several articles from various newspapers, magazines, and radio announcements.
Reynolds Packard wrote this copy of an undated article for the Hollywood Times recounting events in Anzio Beach Head in 1943 in which Bachenheimer was able to take 8 Germans prisoner.
Written by Robert Wilson and dated September 22, 1944, this radio copy is an account of Bachenheimer’s rise to the status of “General” while he lead an army of 300 Dutch in their fight against the Nazis.
Martha Gelhorn wrote this copy for Collier’s Magazine on December 2, 1944 detaling Bachenheimer story. She describes him as “tall and solid, with a dark, short mat of hair, and bright small eyes and a curly mouth.” She recounts her interview with Bachenheimer. When asked why he engaged with the Nazis, he replied, “Well, this was the first time any of these Dutch saw an American and it wouldn’t look right for the American to run off just as soon as he saw some Germans.”
The Los Angeles Times article called “Hollywood Hero Becomes ‘General’ of a Dutch Army” includes an interview with Ethel, his wife, whom they call “Penny.” The article states that the Dutch resistance that Bachenheimer lead was called “The Free netherlands Army.”
This article is about Operation Market Garden written by Ton Lourens in 1991 for a Dutch publication called Waaloversteek Waalcrossing. The text is written in Dutch with an English translation next to it.
My grandmother was known by many in her hometown of Buena Park, California because she single-handedly started a children’s theater in the early 1980’s and served on the Fine Arts Commission for decades. Although she was proud of these accomplishments, she was more interested in making sure that Bachenheimer (or Ted as she called him) was never forgotten. This article from the Buena Park/Anheim Independent was published July 19, 2002.
Gordon Dillow wrote this article for the Orange County Register, which is a newspaper in California, published August 24, 2003 about Bachenheimer and his wife Ethel.
